She must have stayed up for the rest of the night, planning our next step. Before I fell asleep, I watched her for a long time, arms folded, deep in thought. I wondered if she inherited her personality from her father or if it was the product of growing up in a castle; I had never met a young woman as reserved and strategic as she was. Still, she was only human. By the next morning, her lack of sleep over the last two weeks was catching up with her. There were dark circles under her eyes, and she fell asleep at breakfast. I saw Kunegunde watching her closely and panicked. I could tell Kunegunde knew something was up.

That night, Rika said she would talk to Daniel about our plan. After she sneaked downstairs and left the tower, I heard the shuffle of Kunegunde’s footsteps. My grandmother peeked around the open doorway into our room and saw me lying alone in our cot. “I thought so.”

I blinked up at her, not sure what to say.

“She’s putting us at risk, coming and going like this. Ulrich could see her and follow her back.”

I closed my eyes. “You and I leave the circle together all the time. Rika is careful. She only goes out at night.”

Kunegunde’s eyes narrowed. “Rika?”

My anger turned to panic as I realized what I’d just done. Kunegunde wasn’t stupid. Rika was too close to Frederika.

“I thought you said her name was Ree.”

“That’s a nickname I call her.”

Kunegunde’s expression tightened. She watched me silently from the doorway. Then she chuckled with a perverse amusement and went upstairs.
